Government Affairs Legislative Internship - 2021 Regular Session

Government Affairs-Legislative Internship:

Hannah KLS Reports (a division of Hannah News Service‐Midwest) is offering a unique internship opportunity in the legislative arena. Most legislative internships require full‐time commitments. Hannah KLS Reports will consider interns able to work as few as 15-20 hours per week (increased hours available if intern is able to commit). The experience, regardless of hours worked, will last a lifetime, and may very well serve as a foot‐in‐the‐door to a career in government affairs.

The Hannah internship experience:


Interns with Hannah KLS Reports will learn about the legislative process and intricacies of Kentucky state government. See syllabus below for an overview of how interns will spend their time.
Work hours for this internship are very flexible but all applicants MUST submit their availability and total number of desired hours with résumé.

Compensation:

$11.00 USD per hour

Work created by interns will be available to Hannah’s entire subscriber base – which includes registered lobbyists, state and local associations, corporations, and government agencies.
Each intern will leave with work samples to showcase and a full evaluation from Hannah management. College credit is also available for many students.

Duration:

Internship: January 1 – March 31, 2021. (possible extension through April 15, 2021)

o   The Legislative Research Commission: An Overview

·        How bills become law or die trying:
o   The legislative process: An Overview
o   The role of committees and chairpersons - Amendments
o   The role of lobbying and the public as advocates
§  Grassroots advocacy:
·        Earned v. purchased media
·        Volunteer / non‐professional advocates
·        Coalition building
·        The use of public awareness campaigns
§  Types of professional advocates and who they represent:
·        Contract lobbyists
·        Corporate lobbyists
·        Association lobbyists
·        State agency lobbyists (liaisons)

PART 2

Legislative industry best practices.


·        Identifying key information from legislative meetings
·        Effective use of industry resources and software
·        Accurately recording and structuring information into meeting summaries:
o   Associated Press style relevant to legislative coverage
o   Hannah News style and formatting for meeting coverage
