AmeriCorps Kentucky College Coach

Kentucky College Coaches are AmeriCorps State and National members that assist high school students with selecting, applying to, and being accepted to a college or career of their choice. This involves hosting school-wide activities and mentoring core students from each grade level (9th-12th grade), as designated by the member’s site supervisor. These priority students will be students who: 1) will likely get through high school, but who are unlikely to go to college; 2) would be first-generation college attendees; and/or 3) are from low-income families.

The Kentucky College Coach should work to help the school attain the following benchmarks:
  1. Number of students reaching college readiness benchmarks in math and reading as measured by the 11th grade ACT;
  2. Number of students applying to college;
  3. Number of students filing the FAFSA;
  4. Number of students moving from high school and accessing remedial courses during the first year of college; and
  5. Number of students who enter college and then persist to sophomore standing.
Methods the Kentucky College Coach will employ in mentoring can include any of the following (as deemed appropriate by the school site supervisor):
  1. Helping students in career planning;
  2. Helping students with time and organizational skills;
  3. Recruiting volunteers within the community to assist with career awareness;
  4. Assisting with classroom instruction by embedding college planning materials among core content;
  5. Assisting teachers and guidance counselors to develop effective tutoring plans for students who need academic assistance; and linking students to volunteers in the community and at local colleges for tutoring;
  6. Mentoring students about high school course selection and placement testing scores which can lead to successful college admission;
  7. Helping students develop financial literacy skills;
  8. Incorporating college-bound curriculum within the site school;
  9. Assisting with family nights, as related to college admission; and
  10. Other types of mentoring based on the needs of students and the direction of school staff and policy.

The member is to serve in the site in a full-time capacity, generally 35-40 hours per week between the dates of August 1, 2020 through May 31, 2021 with the option to renew for multiple years.
