Peer Career Advisor (2019 -2020 Academic Year)

Position Description
Apply to be a Peer Career Advisor in the Career Development Center!

Peer Career Advisors are trained to...
  • Assist students during drop-in hours with resumes, cover letters and part-time job search
  • Provide timely feedback via email to students on resumes, cover letters and personal statements via our Document Drop program
  • Deliver presentations to student organizations and in classrooms on basic career topics and CDC services
  • Assist with the coordination of CDC events such as career fairs, workshops and promotional tables
  • Assist staff with projects of interest to them, such as social media, data analysis, program development, and more!

In addition to hourly payment, PCAs may be able to use the experience as an internship for course credit, pending the approval of their department and the director.

Qualifications
  • Must maintain full time enrollment at UofL as an undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Undergraduates must have and maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Graduate students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and not hold any other Graduate Assistant position on campus.
  • Some availability during drop-in hours , Monday through Friday 10 am - 2 pm.
  • Undergraduates must be a sophomore or above with at least one semester completed at UofL.
  • All applicants must be in good standing with the University.
  • Any profiles on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, Instagram, etc.) must be professional in nature and content. 
  • Ability to work 15 hours a week during the academic term.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills, and active listening skills.
  • Display a desire to help others and be customer service oriented.
  • Motivated to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable conducting individual and group presentations. 

Specialized Training
One day of paid training is provided at the beginning of the year with additional bi-weekly professional development throughout the semester provided by supervisor.

Significant Duties and Responsibilities
  • Be available to participate in all paid training at beginning of the year and weekly meetings throughout the year.
  • Provide information and assistance to students coming into the CDC.
  • Assist staff in advising students in daily Drop-in Advising Program.
  • Critique resumes and cover letters as part of Document Drop Program. 
  • Assist students in setting up accounts and using technology including Cards Career Connection powered by Handshake.
  • Assist with marketing initiatives from brainstorming to implementation.
  • Assist with and/or conduct pre-established workshops and presentations according to guidelines.

  • A resume;
  • A cover letter highlighting qualifications relevant to the position and why you are interested in becoming a Peer Career Advisor;
  • A class schedule for Fall 2019; and
  • A list of at least 2 references (at least 1 UofL faculty/administrator preferred) with contact information.
